Kentucky has 27 distilleries including Maker's Mark and Jim Beam. The US filled approximately 2,437,603 barrels with bourbon last year. It must also be aged in NEW, CHARRED oak containers. There isn’t a specification on using AMERICAN OAK, but it is almost always used. The bourbon is aged anywhere from 2 - 10 years in its barrel.
The barrels we source are all single use. Their authenticity can be found in the charring and frequently in the distillery stamps on the barrel heads. Many of the bourbon barrels go on to have second careers in places such as the tequila and beer industries.
Barrel staves, by nature are all cupped and slightly curved. Their patina is unique on each piece with no two ever exactly the same. By turning these individual pieces into distinctive functional art and home decor gives them another purpose, another use. And it saves them from the tragedy of being turned into mulch or just tossed away.
This Stave opener measure approx. 9.25" x 2.75" x 1".
The stave has been sanded to remove debris, barrel wax and excess charring from back. They are sealed with 3 coats of Minwax polyurethane clear coat. The back charring will not leave marks on walls, clothing etc. The opener is made from solid cast iron. A discrete keyhole mounting system is used to hang on the wall. Mounting screw included.
